Friendsville TN
Friendsville is a small town with a big history. It was founded in the late 1790s, when several Quaker families from North Carolina relocated into what is now Blount County and established a Friends meeting house about 12 miles from Maryville, the county seat. The families later built a gristmill and a sawmill in the area and started the town by selling plots of land. The town was actually incorporated in 1953 and still only has a little over 1000 residents, but its history tells a much bigger story. The Quakers, or Friends, as they are also known, did not support the Civil War or slavery and operated several stops along the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War they helped freed and runaway slaves move north to avoid the war and the southern residents who wanted to keep them enslaved. These brave folks played an important role in American history.
Friendsville also sits on a large bed of pink marble. The stone that is mined out of the active quarries still operating there is known across the world for its natural beauty and was used in the facades and floors of many important buildings in the nation, including the Smithsonian, the National Gallery of Art and Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials located in Washington, DC.
