History of Fountain City

Fountain City, Tennessee was formed in 1859 and incorporated as a town in 1860. Fountain City was named for the natural springs that existed in the area when the first settlers arrived around 1840. The town started out as an agricultural community, but by 1855 less than 100 people lived there until two men named Anderson Mitchell and Charles Davis bought large tracts of land to start building businesses and homes. Today, fountain city is home to several thousand people and has a large industrial base with headquarters for companies including TVA and FirstEnergy Corp.
