A Brief History of Cleveland

Cleveland is part of the original land of the Cherokees. They ruled this area of North America for years. It is believed in 1540, a Spanish explorer named Hernando de Soto was the first European settler to make it to this area. By the 1830s, more and more European settlers began to take over this area that is now Cleveland. In 1863, a legislative, act similar to how Bradley County was created, established a county seat. The county seat was to be named Cleveland after Colonel Benjamin Cleveland, a Revolutionary War commander. The town was incorporated in 1842.
