Altamont was established in 1846 as the county seat for Grundy County, and incorporated in 1854. The town’s name comes from combining the two words “alto” and “mont” which respectively mean altitude and mountain. The population of Altamont was diminished by the Civil War, but by 1870 it had grown to 217 residents. Altamont contains one of the oldest Mormon Congregations in the Southeastern United States. The congregation started in the 1890s and Mormon Chapel was built in 1909 just North of Altamont in Northcutt Cove. The town is part of the upper watershed of the Collins River. Altamont is also the hometown of singer-songwriter Arlo Gilliam. If you’re a hiker you may want to try out the Lower Falls Trail which leads to Greeter Falls in Altamont.
