Wadmalaw Island is in Charleston County, South Carolina, and is one of the Sea Islands. The Sea Islands are a chain of barrier islands along the Atlantic Coast. It is located to the southwest of Johns Island and mostly encircled by it. It is bordered on the other sides by Church Creek, Bohicket Creek, and the Edisto River.

The climate of Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina is similar to that experienced by its neighboring towns along the coast: Winters are mild, with average temperatures around 60 degrees Fahrenheit; summers can be quite hot—reaching 90+ during days.

History of Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina

Captain Robert Sandford settled on Wadmalaw Island with the Berkely Bay crew in 1666. History suggests that Sandford landed in what is now Rockville, South Carolina. Four years later, colonists from England arrived, surviving on the generosity of Native Americans who shared food with them.

In 1890, the residents arranged the first regatta at Rockville, an event that still happens annually to this day.

In more current events, the Lipton Tea Company opened and operated a tea farm on Wadmalaw Island from 1960 to 1987. In 1987, the tea farm was purchased and renamed as The Charleston Tea Garden. They sold American Classic Tea and Sam's Choice Instant Tea through Sam's Clubs throughout the USA. As of 2003, Bigelow Tea Company now owns the land and offers tours of the last remaining working tea farm in the US.
