History of Wadmalaw, South Carolina

Captain Robert Sandford settled on Wadmalaw Island with the Berkely Bay crew in 1666. Four years later, colonists from England arrived and survived on the generosity of Native Americans who shared food with them. In 1890, the residents of Rockville arranged for the first regatta on their river, an event that is still held annually.

In more current events, 1960 saw the Lipton Tea Company open and operate a tea farm on Wadmalaw Island until 1987. In that year, the tea farm was purchased by another company and renamed as The Charleston Tea Garden. Between the 1960s and 1980s, The Charleston Tea Garden sold and shipped American Classic Tea and Sam's Choice Instant Tea through Sam's Clubs throughout the United States. In 2003, ownership of the land was transferred to Bigelow, who now offers tours of this historic tea farm as well as sells of some products grown on site.
