History of James Island, South Carolina

James Island is a place of historical significance, particularly in the early days of America. in 1782, Tadeusz Kosciuszko led the continental army during the Revolutionary War in his last known armed battle. James Island is also the battleground for the Battle of Secessionville.

The town was incorporated in 1993 and Joan Sooy was elected first mayor a few months later. Because of law changes, the town of James Island lost its incorporated status various times and had to be reincorporated in 2002, 2006, and again in 2012.
