So, what is Fort Sumter, South Carolina like?
Fort Sumter is located on an artificial island in the Charleston Harbor. It is accessible by a 30 minute ferry ride from Charleston. Private boats are no longer allowed on the Island, but you can stop at the visitors center and take the ferry across the harbor. The weather at Fort Sumter is similar to that of other places along the coast in South Carolina. The highs in winter are around 60 and the highs in the summer are around 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
History of Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter is a sea fort that was built on an island designed to protect Charleston, South Carolina from enemies at sea. It was built during the War of 1812, but still wasn't complete as of 1861 when the Battle of Fort Sumter started the Civil War. The fort took on a lot of damage and was never fully rebuilt after the war. Now Fort Sumter serves as a portion of the Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park. It is open to the public.
