The village of Watch Hill, Rhode Island located in the town of Westerly, RI, has a fascinating story. Before commercial air travel, the small beachfront community was the premier destination for the wealthy looking to get away from the cities of New York and Boston in the summer months. Although a small community it has many miles of bay and ocean coast line making it ideal for a summer vacations. In 1938 the village of Watch Hill, RI was forever changed when it was directly hit by a major hurricane. Entire homes were washed away from Napatree Point that would never be rebuilt, hotels that dotted the coast line were closed permanently and rebuilding efforts took many years for those that could rebuild.
Today the area is a very popular tourist destination and revitalization of the Ocean House hotel has made it a destination for the ultra wealthy again as well.
