Wister was founded in the mid 1700s. Caspar Wistar, a German glassmaker, was one of the first major landowners in the town. Caspar and his family went on to open many other businesses in the area. Wister has many old homes from the 1700s and 1800s that are still standing today. The Wistar family's home for over 160 years is now standing as a museum. Ivy Lodge is a historic home located in the Wister neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was originally the home of John Jay Smith, founder of Philadelphia's Laurel Hill Cemetery and librarian at the Library Company of Philadelphia.
