Initially the town of Somerton was known as Smithfield and was a village in Moreland Township. However, in 1830, the town name was changed in honor of an officer in the American Revolution, Jacob Sommer. Jacob was held prisoner for four years during the American Revolution before being released in 1782. A neat landmark in town is the Somerton Tanks Farm which was built in 1954. The farm's mission is to bring the benefits of urban agriculture to Philadelphia's neighborhoods. Somerton is a more relaxed, not as densely populated neighborhood compared to others nearby.
