Duncannon was originally called Petersburg, and under the latter name was laid out in 1792. The present name is derived from Duncan's Island in the Susquehanna River.The Puritan missionary David Brainerd visited the area in the 1740s. In his journal he describes his trip on the Susquehanna and his brief stay with an Indian tribe on Duncan's Island, across the river from present-day Duncannon.The Mutzabaugh family has close connection to the town, as their market (now grocery store) named after the family has been a presence in the town since 1920, opening originally along the old railroad crossing between Market Square and High Street.
There is a mural on the side of a house near the intersection of Cumberland Street and Market Street. The sign on the mural explains that it was painted by 620 community members between September 2003 and December 2004 and show images that uniquely represent Duncannon and Eastern Perry County. Sort of a Where's Waldo , there is the Skatelite skate park, covered bridges, fire departments, the Clark's Ferry and Rockville Bridges and the Statue of Liberty on the old bridge pier in the Susquehanna.

Our Church got water in the basement Fellowship Hall after a heavy rain AND we had a wedding going on there THE NEXT DAY!! Joe and his team came out that night with his equipment. By 9am the next morning. . everything was dry and clean like nothing happened! Great Company!
