The small town of Catawissa is nestled among the beautiful hills and mountains in central Pennsylvania. A large part of its borders follow the Creek with which it shares its name, while another portion follows the Susquehanna River. The town itself has been known by many names including “Hughesburg,” “Oskohary,” and “Catawissey,” but it’s current name is derived from its oldest name – “Catawese” – bestowed by the Native Americans and believed to mean “pure water.” The area began to be settled by European colonists in the early 1700’s and through its advantageous position on the Susquehanna became a locally important stop for boats carrying goods along the river.
While the town’s position may be economically advantageous, being situated between two waterways is not without its consequences.
