Benton, Pennsylvania is a small borough located in Columbia County. While home to only about 1000 residents, Benton is still a thriving community, host to several attractions. In the summer, visitors can attend the annual Benton Frontier Days & Rodeo - an event that lasts six days and features barrel racing and a championship rodeo, among other activities. Visitors can also start their journey along The Fishing Creek Antique Shopping Trail here in Benton, or even find prime fishing at the Fishing Creek dam.
Built in 1915, the dam which spans Fishing Creek was a direct response to the town’s tragic history with fires. In 1910, an incident dubbed The Great Benton Fire destroyed much of the community. Within less than a year, the town experienced another fire which wiped out almost the entire Rohr McHenry Distilling Company. Only the distillery’s boiler house remained standing and it was converted into a museum . . . which burned down in 1962. A series of three separate fires in 1913 subsequently led the town to build the Fishing Creek dam, to provide ready access to water.
No longer relying on simply a dam, today citizens put their trust in Benton’s own Volunteer Fire Company to ensure fires are handled quickly and efficiently, preventing spreading and escalation.
