Scappoose sits riverside in Columbia County, Oregon along the Columbia River channels. Scappoose gained its name from a nearby stream of Native American origins; the word Scappoose means “gravelly plain”. Scappoose is a midsize city made up of roughly 8,000 individuals. Home to the Scappoose Bay, an ecologically important habitat for native birds on the Pacific Flyway, the bay also provides a popular kayaking spot. The Crown Zellerbach trail spans all the way towards Vernonia. Scappoose also features the Peace Candle of the World located on Highway 30. Constructed of a 50-foot silo and covered in wax, the candle is still maintained by private owners who have outfitted it with a neon flame.
