The largest city and county seat of Yamhill County, Oregon is McMinnville. The town founder, William T. Newby, named the town after his hometown of McMinnville, Tennessee. Newby was part of the Great Migration of 1843, which is when residents of eastern states moved to the west. Newby claimed land in what was then Oregon County and built a grist mill in 1853, founding the town in 1856. He later donated land to support a college, McMinnville College, which grew into Linfield University.  

Other attractions are the Wings and Waves Water Park, Joe Dancer Park, and Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, the home of Howard Hughes's famed Spruce Goose flying boat. The Spruce Goose is the world’s largest propeller-driven seaplane.  

Wings and Waves Waterpark is an indoor, all-season waterpark that includes ten waterslides, ranging from slides suitable for children to slides for daredevils, and a fun wave pool. One slide is built out of a real Boeing 747 aircraft that sits on the roof.   

The city is part of the well-developed wine industry in the Willamette Valley, which has hundreds of wineries and vineyards. 

McMinnville is 54 miles from Lincoln City on the Pacific Ocean, 37 miles from Portland, and 26 miles from Salem, the state capital.
