The city of Catoosa was founded in 1883 when the Federal Government opened a post office here. Prior to that the region was controlled by the Cherokee Nation. The name of the city is derived from the Cherokee language. The interpretations vary but include “between two hills”. The Tulsa Port of Catoosa opened in 1971 and provided an economic boom for the city. With this economic boom, water restoration services are more important to the city. The Port of Catoosa is part of the Kerr-McClellan Arkansas River Navigation System and is one of the farthest inland seaports in the United States. This port links Tulsa to the Arkansas River, the Mississippi River, and eventually to the Gulf of Mexico.
The infamous outlaw depicted in Lonesome Dove, Bluford “Blue” Duck, called Catoosa his home. Bluford Duck is buried in Dick Duck Cemetery. Other points of interest include the Blue Whale of Catoosa, a famous Route 66 landmark, is located east of downtown. Catoosa’s Historical Society founded the Catoosa Historical Museum. The replica of an old train depot makes this museum easy to identify.
The population of 7,440 people, according to the 2020 United States census, has grown 36% from 2000 when the population was 5,449 people. The need for fire damage restoration has continued to increase as the population grows.
Catoosa was struck by an F4 tornado on April 24, 1993. The tornado left 7 people dead and caused an estimated $500,000 in damage. Governor David Walters deployed the National Guard troops to stabilize the community.
