The Connecticut legislature set aside half a million acres in 1792 in the Connecticut Western Reserve for the Connecticut "Sufferers." The area - which is now part of Ohio - was first established as the "Sufferers' Lands" and later named "Fire Lands." The resale of the Fire Lands was intended as financial restitution for Connecticut residents of the towns whose homes had been burned by British forces in 1779 and 1781 during the Revolutionary War.
