The history of Mount Vernon, New York dates back to 1688 when a group of settlers arrived in the area. After spending some time looking for a suitable spot for their new town, they decided to found it on the banks of the Christina Kill which locals had named after Queen Christina of Sweden. When she heard about this choice, Queen Christina was so overjoyed that she publicly named the city herself: "Christina's Fief". After Queen Christina's death, however, the name was changed to its current form.
