History of West Orange

West Orange originally belonged to the Native American Hackensack clan for thousands of years. In the 14th and 15th centuries, this area was distributed and traded between the Hackensack clan and many European settlers like the Dutch, Scottish and English. In 1666,  Puritan Captain Robert Treat purchased the bit of land that is now West Orange. A dutchman was the first to actually settle and begin a farm in the area. By the 1700s, West Orange was known for being a part of the Newark Mountains. West Orange was first incorporated as a township in 1863, and then reincorporated as a town in 1900.
