Located on the northern coast of New Jersey, Leonardo is a community section of Middletown Township. Complete with sweeping views of Sandy Hook Bay and New York City, the beachfront area is part of the historic area discovered in 1609 by Captain Henry Hudson. European settlers arrived in the region after England acquired the land and railroads were constructed. Leonardo is named for James and Henry Leonard who were the first ironmasters of New Jersey. A section of the Historic Henry Hudson Bike Trail which traverses the northern Monmouth County coast runs through wooded areas of Leonardo. The trail is an excellent place to experience native shore habitats. Leonardo is nationally renowned as the setting of the 1994 movie Clerks where director Kevin Smith worked at a local convenience store. Kevin used Leonardo as the setting for several subsequent movies he created.
