Jobstown, NJ located in Springfield Township Burlington County, New Jersey is a wide-open land with a rich history in American thoroughbred horse racing.
Rancocas Stables was founded in 1870 by Pierre Lorillard IV. Lorillard was a wealthy tobacco manufacturer, built a premier thoroughbred breeding and training facility in the US turning out 3 of the greatest runners in the late 1800’s. Upon his death, Lily A. Livingston inherited the property, but sold it to the oil tycoon, Harry Sinclair.
Under Sinclair’s ownership the farm was expanded and continued to prosper through the 1920’s, producing a Kentucky Derby winner and 3 Belmont Stakes winners. Rancocas Stables held the record for winnings in 1923, a record that held until 1941. Rancocas Stables remains a working farm and is known as Helis Stock Farm with the original decorated gate and buildings still present.
This area of Central Jersey is situated between the metropolitan cities of Philadelphia and New York City; however, it remains rather undisturbed, rural and wooded. Known as the one of the last ecosystems of the Atlantic Coastal Pinelands, the area helps recharge over 17 trillion gallons of water through the Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer, which contains some of the purest water in the United States. The Pinelands or Pine Barrens has its own unique micro-climate of humid subtropical to humid continental climate, a transitional climate that in times of drought is very prone to wildfires. Lenape Indians conducted controlled fires for clearing brush to allow for better plant yields and hunting.
