Highlands, New Jersey is a coastal borough situated on the northeastern corner of Monmouth County. During the war, the British army maintained control of the Highlands and moved troops through the area for its duration. Years after the war in the mid-19^th century, as the area became more developed with hotels, homes, a railroad and ferry from New York City, visitors descended on the area and it became a vacation destination. Today, Highlands is a densely populated town with bars, restaurants, sport fishing and boating. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the Atlantic-facing beach and the stunning view from sites situated among the hills. Twin Lights State Historic Site dominates a section of bluffs and contains the double lighthouses constructed in 1862. Facing Sandy Hook Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, they provided essential navigational aid for approaching seafarers. The iconic towers were the first in the US to use electric lighting. A museum on site chronicles the building’s history with artifacts and tours of the interior.
