Dayton, New Jersey, began as a tavern built by James Whitlock around 1750. The village was known as the Crossroads for many years until it was renamed Dayton. William Dayton, an attorney for the Jamesburg Agricultural Railroad, helped settle disagreements concerning the railway's right of way. The village adopted his name in 1866. He went on to become a Senator, VP Nominee, and Minister to France. 

The city has evolved from an agricultural base to pharmaceutical manufacturing, laboratories, distribution, and clothing manufacturing. There is an active Chamber of Commerce in the area, listing many Dayton-based firms. Events are held regularly, including the NJ Chamber Challenge Cup Golf Tournament on May 19 and the NJ Chamber Open House and Reception on June 12.
