Stanton is a city in Stanton County, Nebraska. The population was 1,577 at the 2010 Census. It is the County seat of Stanton County. Stanton was platted in 1870. Both the city and county are named after Edwin Stanton, secretary of war for President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. Stanton County prefix 53 (it had the 53rd-greatest number of vehicles registered in the county when the license plate system was established in 1922). For the 2023 school year, there are 2 public schools serving 379 students in Stanton Community Schools School Stanton Public Elementary School and Stanton Public High School. The City of Stanton, Nebraska is a rural community nestled in the rolling hills 12 miles southeast of Norfolk along Nebraska Highway 24. Stanton has a representative that is involved with the Northeast Nebraska Travel Council. This representative also serves on the State Board for Nebraska Tourism and promotes the community of Stanton in the Nebraska Tourism Guide. They have an annual Fourth of July Celebration in Stanton is done with Community Club funds and volunteers. Twice a year they have city wide garage sales, 1 is in the Spring and the other 1 is in the Fall. The local Community Club holds fish fry, and they have an annual Teacher's welcome breakfast in the Fall for all of their teachers in the 2 schools. The community golf course, called the Elkhorn Acres Golf Club, is located on the South side of town along Hwy 57.
