Hartington is a city in Cedar County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,554 at the 2010 census. Hartington was platted in 1883, as a water stop on the railroad. A water stop on a railroad is a place where the steam trains stop to replenish water. Cedar County can claim a distant link to British royalty, Hartington received its name as a tribute to Lord Hartington, a Briton that had visited the United States about the time the town sited. Hartington is the county seat of Cedar County Nebraska. The Courthouse was built in 1891. The history of this area in Northeast Nebraska can be traced back to the 1650s when the Omaha Indians lived along the Bow Creek area.
