History of Thomasville
Thomasville, North Carolina, was named after John Warwick Thomas, who pushed to get a railroad built through Davidson County. Thomas knew the railroad would be coming through and built the first store on present-day Main Street. On January 8, 1857, Thomasville became incorporated and occupied just one square mile. The railroad ran through the middle of Thomasville and divided the town into north and south sections.
The Thomasville Railroad Passenger Depot is one of the oldest remaining train stations in North Carolina. It was built between 1870-1871 and functioned primarily as a passenger railroad until 1912. Because of the Thomasville Railroad Passenger Depot and its distinct heritage, train enthusiasts travel from all over to visit the small town.
Thomasville also hosts the oldest award-winning festival in North Carolina: Everybody’s Day. Everybody’s Day is a day of celebrating community. For over 100 years, people have come from all over for this festival which is known for its arts and crafts vendors, live music, and delicious food.
Thomasville is also known for The Big Chair. Today the chair stands at a whopping 30 feet tall, with the seat of the chair being ten and a half feet wide. Originally the chair was made from pine and over time the chair wore down in 1936. The new chair was built in 1950 and was constructed out of steel and concrete.
