History of Four Oaks

The history of Four Oaks dates back to 1813. The town was originally known as Jacksonville Station, but it was renamed in 1851 after the famous elm trees that grew in abundance throughout the area. In its early days, Four Oaks was a farming community, but it quickly became home to various industries that drew industry away from Raleigh in the early 1900s. The town is also home to many historic structures that have survived fires, floods and economic depressions over the years.  It became a city in 1920, but then declined in population over time until today when it has reached only about 1450 people.
