History of Bentonville, NC

The first European settlement in Bentonville was in 1779 by Captain William Deshong, who surveyed land and named the new town Bentonville after his friend, General William H. Benton. In 1803, the North Carolina legislature created the county of Iredell from portions of Burke, Lincoln and Surry counties, with the Columbus courthouse serving as the county seat of government until 1809, when a new courthouse was built in Statesville. In 1832, Bentonville was incorporated as a town and named for Senator Reuben H. Benton.
