The town was founded in 1846 and was named after the Choctaw word for "sassafras." Shubuta was once a thriving lumber town, and it was home to several sawmills and other wood-related industries. However, the town's economy declined in the early 20th century as the lumber industry moved to other parts of the country.



Today, Shubuta is a bedroom community for people who work in nearby towns and cities. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a gas station, and a few restaurants.



Shubuta is a close-knit community, and residents are proud of their town's history and heritage. The town is home to a number of annual events, including the Shubuta Mule Festival and the Shubuta Christmas Parade.
