The small, rural town of Centreville owes its beginnings to the railroad industry in the early 1800s. After the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad built a depot in the area, the town began to develop around it. In March of 1884, the Town of Centreville was officially incorporated. Later in 1942, Camp Van Dorm, the nation’s third largest military training camp, opened just three miles from Centreville. With it, came 40,000 soldiers, which significantly boosted both the population and the economy of the town. Today, neither the railroad nor the military installation are active in Centreville, but its 1,200 current residents remain committed to the preservation of their town’s history and its natural beauty.
