The city of Canton is the county seat of Madison County, founded in 1828 and was named after President James Madison. There are two stories of how Canton got its name, and both are attributed the name to Chinese origin. One states that Canton, Mississippi is the exact opposite side of the world as Canton, China, and was hence named. The other story states that the daughter of a Chinese family died in the area and the sympathetic community named the town for the family. In 1836, the town was legally incorporated. The city lies on a low ridgeline between the Pearl and Big Black rivers 20 miles north of Jackson. Due to the location of the city certain areas experience flooding during heavy rains. Other events held annually are the Canton Christmas Festival and the Mississippi Championship Hot Air Balloon Festival. Many notables have ties to the city such as Sister Thea Bowman, an educator, Missionary Disciple, Advocate for Cultural Awareness and Racial Harmony.
