Hastings 

Hastings is a city situated mainly in Dakota County, Minnesota and is the county seat, with a portion in Washington County, Minnesota, United States. The city is near the meeting point of the Mississippi, Saint Croix, and Vermillion River. In the 2020 consensus, there was 22,154 residents in Hastings MN. The city was named after the first elected governor of Minnesota, Henry Hastings Sibley.

Hastings has a couple key advantages that have contributed to it's growth over the years including: Being a good River boat port and is close to a hydropower resource at the falls of the vermillion River.

In 1820, a military unit from Fort Snelling camped around Hastings to guard a blocked shipment of supplies. Lieutenant William G. Oliver guarded the area that came to be known as Oliver's grove. In 1833 a trading post was opened. The treaty of Mendota opened the area for settlement in 1851. In 1857 Hastings was named the county seat of Dakota County. The name "Hastings" was drawn from a hat from suggestions by several of the original founders and was attributed to two major Minnesota railroads,The Hastings and Dakota railway and the Stillwater and Hastings railway.

Geography

Hastings is on the Mississippi side of the divide with the St. Croix River, so that the Saint Croix is "across" The Mississippi River. Prescott, Wisconsin is on the Wisconsin side of the confluence.
