Traveling on Minnesota Highway 107 or connecting with Minnesota Highway 70 through Pine County is where you will find Grasston and Henriette. Nearby is where you will also find the Snake River. The Snake River is a 104-mile-long tributary of the St. Croix River in east-central Minnesota. With its tributaries, the Snake River drains a 1,009 square mile area from the northern counties along with Kanabec, Mille Lacs and Pine Counties. The major tributaries are the Knife River, Ann River, Groundhouse River and Rice Creek.

After initially flowing southward from its head waters, the Snake flows through Kanabec County, turning eastward near Mora, Minnesota following a minor fault line. It drains into the St. Croix River 13 miles east of Pine City. The Knife and Snake River serve as the main waterway to connect the St. Croix River with Mille Lacs Lake. Two additional bodies of water that are associated with the Snake are Cross Lake and Pokegama Lake. Together with Cross Lake and the Kettle River, the 1757 edition of the Mitchell Map identifies this river system as "Portage River" as it served as the waterway that connected the St. Croix River with Mille Lacs Lake and the upper Mississippi River via a short portage.
