Manchester Cleanup and Restoration

Manchester is a charming 19th-century village located just 20 miles southwest of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Nestled in the basin of the River Raisin, Manchester is surrounded by beautiful landscapes. With downtown shopping, historic architecture, and enchanting parks, Manchester is a charming destination for the whole family.

Manchester was one of the last places settled in the area because of the boggy ground and tree stumps. The farmlands were described in "oak openings" by James Fenimore Cooper.

The first settlers came from the New England states, but by the 1880's German settlers moved to the area and opened businesses and began farming. The Germans interjected the idea of having fun as well as making money on public events. For the parades they build floats to highlight their services. Goods were thrown as favors to the crowds, a custom that still occurs at the annual Community Fair Parade.

Manchester holds many community events throughout the year. Every summer, they hold their famous Manchester Chicken Broil, to raise funds for the schools, parks, library and much more. Some residents joke that the year begins and ends the third Thursday in July, when the local residents prepare and serve over 14,000 charcoal grilled chicken dinners in one day. The Manchester Chicken Broil will be held for the 70th time in 2023.

Summer also brings the Community Fair, Street Festival, Fourth of July Fireworks, and weekly gazebo concerts by Riverfolk Music and Arts Organization. In winter, Christmas in the Village brings holiday cheer for everyone to enjoy.

You can also check out the Manchester Tour de Barn Quilts, which is a self-guided biking or driving tour to see the large, colorful quilt blocks on the sides of local barns. Or you can participate in the canoe and boat races which are held each May.
