The railroad helped bring in a new era of logging industry not only to Clare, but to the state of Michigan. Although the High School's mascot, the Pioneers, can be named after the Cities rich history in logging and railroads, Clare is also known for the Purple Gang. A notorious group of men that controlled much of large portion of Michigan during the Prohibition era. One of the most Notorious landmarks in Clare where the Purple Gang would gather and make tunnels throughout the town is the Doherty Hotel. The hotel still stands today and is fully operational .
