The history of Waldo, Maine began with indigenous people and it continued as United States territory. It all started when the first European settlers arrived in 1770, and today it is home to over 3,000 people. In the 19th century Waldo was an important shipping port for lumber and fish. As the years went by, Waldo developed from a small village into a city due to its thriving industrial base and established businesses. Situated at the head of navigation on the tidal Penobscot River, Waldo developed as a shipbuilding center after 1820.
