History of Scarborough
In 1630, John V. Stratton opened a trading post in the now-Scarborough area. About 45 years later, this area became a popular coastal settlement. Because of King Phillip's War, the area was destroyed and many people left or were taken captive. A truce was signed in 1699, and by 1702, settlement began to flourish again. It took some time but by 1749, it was began to prosper with its own economy. Cattle and timber were important products the residents would trade and sell. Scarborough had many many water power sites which helped operate the sawmills.
