History of Rockland
Rockland, Maine is a historic seaside community that has been the destination for visitors and residents for more than 200 years. The first settlers in Rockland were seafarers from Europe who came to fish, trade, and find shelter from bad weather. First settled in 1623 by French fishermen, the area was once called "Pemaquid" and became a central archipelego in colonial trade between the New England colonies and Europeans. By 1771 the town was filled with many fishing families who wanted to live on their boats in the harbor. In 1807 Rockland separated from Lincoln and became an independent town.
