History of Naples
The history of Naples, Maine, is a mixture of the French, English and Native American tribes that came together to form one island. In the 1700s, it was still considered part of Little Placentia due to its close proximity to the New Hampshire border. Not much is known about who lived in Naples at this time, but it appears their original way of living was altered when Alexander Scammell founded a trading post on the island in 1771. The town grew significantly in size and importance after the War of 1812 due to its location on a crucial transportation route between New York City and Quebec.
