Fryeburg, Maine has been an important place for thousands of years. The town has a rich history that began with Native American settlements and continues to this day. Fryeburg was first settled by the Wabanaki tribe nearly 12,000 years ago. Many European settlers were drawn to the area by the rich farmland. In 1804, the town was incorporated by an act of the legislature as "Fryeburg Academy Town," which had been chartered as a village in 1793. The town's history is full of culture and tradition, with stories that have been passed down through generations.
