The history of Damariscotta, Maine can be traced back as far as the 1630s when the first record of settlement appears in Plymouth Colony records. The area was primarily used for farming and fishing until a grist mill was opened in 1816 that brought an influx of settlers. In 1823, Damariscotta became a town and with its new status began to flourish as an important shipping center.
