History of Bridgton

The town of Bridgton was granted in 1793, but was not organized until 1806. The first settler was John Hazen and his family who arrived in 1783. Bridgton became a town because it was important for its location on the streams that flow from Mooselookwoonteet (Moxie Lake) and toward Long Pond, as well as its proximity to the Portland area. Bridgton, Maine was originally part of the Androscoggin Indian Territory, before land claims and settlements by New Englanders. During the War of 1812, British troops would battle American soldiers in and around the town, but Bridgton itself was not attacked.
