Southwick is located in the Pioneer Valley and part of Hampden County. This land was originally inhabited by Native American Tribes. In 1770 the town became fully independent. In the 1800's Irish immigrants came to work on the canal that was built to link Northampton Massachusetts to New Haven Connecticut. However, the railroad caused the canal to be faded out. The New Haven and Northampton Railroad (also known as the Canal Line) was completed in the late 1840's, which was built along side the canal. This railway was abandoned in 1976 and in 2022 was converted into a rail trail leading into Granby Connecticut. 

Located in Southwick is the Joseph Moore House which he built in 1751. The house was restored and is now a museum with the Southwick Historical Society. In 1872 the Charles Gillet Cigar Factory was built and is still standing today. 

In the early years the residents of Southwick would have to form a bucket brigade when battling fires as there was no fire department. This lead to major fire damage if the building was not burned to the ground. The Great Flood of 1936 in which the Connecticut River had crested at 37.6 feet in Hartford CT. and had caused major water damage to several homes and businesses throughout the Pioneer Valley.
