History of Chartley
Chartley, Massachusetts was once called the town of Walden. The town’s earliest settlers were German and Irish immigrants with a Protestant majority. They were mostly farmers, and they started in 1726 when the first structure was built. Then in 1728, it became incorporated as a town. In 1778, Chartley changed its name to Edmundsfield which lasted until 1853 when it became Chartley once again. Today, however, Chartley is a town in northwestern Massachusetts and is one of the smallest towns in Worcester County in terms of population and geographic size. Despite its small size, though, it holds great importance to the region as a tourist destination and has been known as a place where natural beauty combines with American history.
