Fire Damage & Water Damage in Calhoun

If you want a tasty treat to share during the next Civic Center meeting, the nearby Specialty Meat Shop on Highway 80 East has some popular entrees. Refrigerated units like the ones in the Shop are sometimes the cause of fire damage, and when they come equipped with an ice maker, they can cause water damage if a line breaks or comes loose. 

Water Damage can Trail Fire Damage, But Not Always

Fire can burn through many things that let water create chaos. An electrical fire might start and trigger the sprinkler system. It can also melt feed lines, making it possible for water to gush out without the need for a water line to slip off its fitting. Firefighters carry this out with high-pressure hoses, but first responders might dump enormous amounts of water on burning things when they first find a building on fire. Other times, the firefighters from Fire Station No. 06 choose to suffocate the flames with a sprayed-in foam. 

Here are some ways to prevent emergencies involving water or fire:

• Keep baking soda near the stove to put out any grease fires – never use water in such a situation
• Never overload breakers – constant tripping or blowing means the circuit is overloaded, so remove some items
• Always safely use candles – away from things that can ignite, and don’t let the candle burn without constant supervision – it’s nothing to relight a candle, but it is a serious hardship to rebuild a home or building

During the holiday season, electrical use skyrockets, and more fires occur. One way to reduce electricity bills over the cooler months is to not decorate with as many lights. One place that makes up for this is right in our neighborhood. It does make you wonder what our founder Archibald Calhoun might have thought of all the beautiful lights and animated displays at Candy Cane Lane during November and December.
