Russell has been a shining gem of Greenup County Kentucky for decades. Since its founding in 1874, the city has been developing and growing as a residential hub for the Tri-State area. Russell is considered a suburb of Ashland, Kentucky and has been the settling place for many working class families.

The city received the amazing news that Ashland Oil would move their headquarters to Russell in 1974. After just two decades, Ashland Oil moved headquarters again to Covington, KY.

Since the city is located on the southern banks of the massive Ohio River, the city always has a possibility for flooding during rainy seasons.
