Hindman Cleanup and Restoration

Hindman is a home rule-class town in, and the county seat of, Knott County, Kentucky. Settlement began by the 1850s and Hindman was established in 1884 when the county was formed. It was named for then Lieutenant Governor James P. Hindman. A post office operated in the area from 1854 to 1863 using the names Cornett's Valley and Cornett's Mill. It reopened in 1874 as McPherson and was renamed Hindman in 1884. Hindman is home to the Hindman Settlement School, which was the earliest rural settlement school. Hindman was served by a pack horse library, which opened in 1935. The forks of Troublesome Creek rise to the east of Hindman and it then runs through Perry county and into Breathitt county before entering the North Fork of the Kentucky River at Haddix. The historic 2022 floods in eastern Kentucky touched nearly every end of Knott county and beyond. Businesses in and around downtown Hindman were submerged in record-high water; they required water damage restoration and fire damage restoration. When the Troublesome Creek rose several feet above its banks July, 28th 2022 it left behind one of the worst flooding disasters to affect Eastern Kentucky in decades. In Knott County, countless homes and buildings suffered damage, including the historic Hindman Settlement School. SERVPRO provided water damage restoration services. Often times severe flooding will cause damage to electrical lines, and fire damage restoration services will also be required. The City of Hindman is honoring the lives lost during the floods that ravaged the region last year with a monument outside of Hindman City Hall.
