With little employers within the city, Flatwoods is known for being a “bedroom” community, since most residents work in the nearby city of Ashland, Kentucky. Since the city’s renaming to Flatwoods in 1938, the city has retained its charming and quiet roots while also being famously recognized as the hometown of the “Achy Breaky Heart” of Billy Ray Cyrus. When the city was remanded “Flatwoods” in 1938, it found this origin from the original topography of the city. Being 650 feet in elevation and having a belt of flat wooded area running parallel along the Ohio River, the name Flatwoods seemed to be a natural fit. However this elevation will assist in the prevention of river flooding, the city is still susceptible to flooding and fire risks year round.

Being within this region of Kentucky, Flatwoods has a true four seasons and each bringing its own issues in regards to fire and water damage.
