Shawnee is a larger area in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The population is around 67,000 people. Started in 1857, Shawnee is a staple to westward expansion and industrial growth in the Kansas City Metro Area.
During the American Civil War, Shawnee was used as a training ground for attacks for William Quantrill, a confederate Guerilla leader. He raided Shawnee first in 1862, burning it to the ground, and second in 1863. He intended to lay siege to Lawrence, Kansas and was using Shawnee as a practice battleground to test out his tactics and train his people.
